Highlights of the Rhine Knitting River Cruise

A group of 34 knitters cruised from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam in the Netherlands viewing the castles along the Rhine and participating in knitting workshops with Carla Scott and Jacqueline van Dillen.

Basel

Early arrivals were treated to a visit to the DMC Yarn Factory on Mulhouse, France. The group toured the complex, seeing the production of their embroidery threads, before being treated to tea and tea and gift bags.

Breisach

Guests had a choice of excursions from our gateway of Breisach; some did a walking tour of Freiburg, home to the Freiburg’s Münster, a Gothic cathedral said to have “the most beautiful spire on earth” ; others wishing a more active excursion cycled through the scenic countryside, or hiked to the Black Forest.

Strasbourg

Most of the group took a panoramic tour of Strasbourg, walking through its iconic UNESCO World Heritage “La Petite France” district, visiting the Cathédrale de Nôtre Dame with its famous astronomical clock, and discovering local yarn stores.

Ludwigshafen & Rüdesheim

From our stop in Ludwigshafen we had a choice of visiting Heidelberg, the medieval town of Ladenburg,  or Speyer, known for the largest Romanesque cathedral in Europe. Once back on board the group participated in a knitting workshop with Carla Scott. Later in the day, we sailed to Rüdesheim and visited Siegfried’s Mechanical Instrument Cabinet, and tasted Rüdesheimer Coffee, ceremoniously made with brandy.

Cologne

We explored Cologne on a walking tour and tasted Altbier in a local tavern, before returning to the ship for another knitting workshop.

Amsterdam

Most of the group toured Amsterdam via a canal cruise, others explored on a walking tour which allowed them to taste Dutch specialties. We traveled outside of the city to visit Knitwit Stable, for a tour by Reina Ovinge and workshop with Jacquline van Dillen.
